Caravaggio VR Experience

Caravaggio VR Experience is a cultural, multimedia project in Location-Based Experience (LBE) format, designed to offer a deep immersion into the life and work of the artist. The entire piece unfolds as a single, continuous narrative in the form of an evocative flashback: it is Caravaggio himself who, through vivid and intense memories, recounts in the first person the most significant moments of his life. Set around 1610, shortly before his dramatic death, the story moves through the places and events that indelibly shaped his revolutionary art.

The challenge

To translate the dramatic intensity, the masterful use of chiaroscuro and the complex biographical arc of Caravaggio into a three-dimensional visual space. The project goes beyond the limits of static museum visits, turning the painter’s masterpieces and life story into a dynamic narrative that reveals the genesis of his works through deep emotional and empathetic engagement.

The format

A cinematic experience in Location-Based Experience (LBE) format, made up of a single continuous Virtual Reality (VR) piece. The use of headsets offers total immersion within historical settings reconstructed with extreme philological accuracy, placing viewers at the centre of the scene to share the master’s gaze.

The impact

Intimate, immersive storytelling: Guided by the painter’s own voice, the narrative explores the artist’s state of mind in 1610, taking audiences back in time to the workshop of the Cavalier d’Arpino, within the walls of the Osteria della Lupa in Rome and through the lively Spanish Quarters of Naples.
Flexibility and local roots: The digital nature of the format allows for the integration of special dedicated scenes, such as the sequence exploring the famous painting The Burial of Saint Lucy (housed on the altar of the Sanctuary of Santa Lucia al Sepolcro), created specifically to highlight the artist’s historical connection with the city of Syracuse.
Prestige and international reach: The installation demonstrates outstanding versatility and exhibition excellence, equally at home in monumental settings and major global events of institutional significance, such as the international exhibition hosted at the National Museum of China in Beijing and curated by the Italian Cultural Institute.
