Brunelleschi’s Dome

Brunelleschi’s Dome is a cultural Virtual Reality (VR) project designed to uncover the history and the ingenious mechanisms behind the creation of this monumental Florentine structure. The entire piece unfolds as a single, continuous narrative that invites viewers to explore, from within, one of the greatest masterpieces of Renaissance architecture. The story is told directly from the perspective of Filippo Brunelleschi, who narrates in the first person the crucial moments of construction across the entire timeframe of its realisation, from 1420 to 1479.

The challenge

To translate the engineering complexity and history of a monumental Renaissance undertaking into a three-dimensional visual space. The project goes beyond the limits of traditional visits, making the pioneering technical solutions and period machinery devised for the construction of the dome perfectly visible and understandable.

The format

A multimedia experience in Location-Based Experience (LBE) format, made up of a single continuous Virtual Reality (VR) piece. The use of headsets guarantees total, high-impact visual immersion, placing audiences directly at the centre of the historical reconstruction.

The impact

First-person authored narration: The choice to entrust the story to the voice of Filippo Brunelleschi creates an intimate, engaging bond with the user, turning the storytelling into a moving, first-hand account of the insights and challenges that redefined the history of art.
Visualising structural evolution: The virtual reconstruction allows viewers to observe the different phases and ingenious devices used over the years of construction, bringing to life the genesis of an immortal masterpiece and offering a clear architectural perspective.
Accessibility and international reach: The availability of the content in eight languages, including Eastern languages, ensures outstanding penetration into global tourist flows, enhancing the region’s cultural offering in close synergy with the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore.
