Virtual reality for learning about optics and vision

How can complex scientific concepts be made clearer, more accessible and more memorable? For Università Statale di Milano, WAY designed a VR app dedicated to learning optics and the neurophysiology of vision, turning theoretical models and phenomena that are difficult to visualise into interactive, measurable experiences. The project includes two teaching modules and a final test that can be integrated with Moodle to track students’ progress.

Objective

Supporting the learning of complex scientific content related to optics and the neurophysiology of vision, making visual defects, perceptual mechanisms and brain injuries easier to understand through immersive, interactive models.

Strategy

Developing a VR app structured into two teaching modules, one dedicated to the physics of vision and one to neurophysiology. The experience lets students explore abstract concepts through three-dimensional models, guided interactions and a final assessment that can be linked to Moodle, integrating virtual reality into both the learning path and teaching progress tracking.

Results

Scientific content that is difficult to represent with traditional tools has been transformed into models that can be explored in virtual reality.
Greater student engagement: the immersive experience fosters attention, participation and active understanding of concepts related to vision.
Teaching progress tracking: the final test, which can be integrated with Moodle, links the VR experience to the assessment process and to monitoring students’ progress.
