Greek Theatre Immersive Experience is a cultural and multimedia project in virtual reality (VR), designed to offer an in-depth and spectacular account of the history of Syracuse’s glorious theatre building. Set in the evocative hall of Palazzo Vermexio, where the archaeological remains of the ancient temple of Artemis are kept, the content unfolds as a continuous narrative flow that harmoniously combines historical rigour with the power of digital storytelling. The experience lets the public travel back in time to rediscover the building’s original appearance and step right into the heart of the earliest great classical performances.
Restoring the three-dimensionality, volumes and original atmosphere to a monument that the centuries have stripped of its stage building. The project moves beyond the limits of a purely contemplative experience of today’s ruins, translating precise historical and architectural data into an immediate visual model capable of making the social value and dramatic power of the ancient theatre tangible.
A multimedia experience in Location-Based Experience (LBE) format, made up of a single continuous piece. Using headsets offers total visual and acoustic immersion with strong emotional impact, turning outreach into a cultural adventure experienced first-hand by the viewer.
Celebrating heritage and architecture: The installation creates an evocative dialogue inside Palazzo Vermexio between the real remains of the temple of Artemis and the virtual reconstruction of the theatre, allowing visitors to explore, from the vantage point of the diazoma, the impressive extent of the cavea and the original skené as it was in the time of Aeschylus.
Immersive theatrical evocation: The staging of Aeschylus’ The Persians turns the viewer into an integral part of the performance. Digitally reproduced sounds, words and movements bring back, intact, all the emotion, lyricism and dramatic power of an ancient performance.
Outreach with international reach: Availability of the content in five languages extends its cultural impact into international tourism circuits, offering visitors, enthusiasts and school groups a memorable and effective key to interpreting Syracuse’s classical heritage.
